Revised March 8, 2024
According to the MnDNR, the Asian Longhorned Beetle (AHB) has not been detected in Minnesota to date, but is expected to affect our forests, particularly maple (20% of our hardwood canopy), in about 3-4 years. Native to Japan, Eastern China and Korea, they have been spotted in Ohio and are believed to be moving west.
The Asian Longhorned beetle is known to attack 29 species of deciduous hardwood trees. The beetle prefers maples, but will also attack alders, birches, elms, horse chestnut, poplars, sycamore, and willows. Source: University of Maryland
What you can do:
- Learn how to identify this beetle from the MnDNR website.
- Report any sightings to the DNR.
- Remove any host trees once compromised.
