If you’ve spent time in Freeman Park, chances are you’ve noticed — and perhaps paused to admire — the beautifully crafted bench that blends art and function.
The bench was designed, built, and donated by Barry Brown, a dedicated advocate for Freeman Park. Barry’s commitment to the park goes far beyond his craftsmanship. He has recruited volunteers, brought in U of M buckthorn researchers, studied the park’s history, and tirelessly championed its preservation and enhancement. Through his efforts, he’s helped build a true community of regular park users and neighbors who contribute their time and talents. Now, Barry has generously offered to build and donate additional benches.
The Park Commission, which oversees city parks, has been discussing park benches for years and has yet to take any action. The current model, when installed with a concrete pad, costs about $4,000 each. Barry’s handcrafted benches, however, complement the park’s natural aesthetic and come at no cost to the city. Additionally, he has offered to personally maintain them.
Parks & Recreation Director Czech noted that benches will be considered in future discussions and cautioned that inspections may be required before installation due to potential liability issues, such as splinters. One other snag is the city’s “standard” of putting the bench on a concrete pad, which apparently cannot be done because Freeman is considered a wetland. Barry’s design has found a way around that using block under each leg.
Community members who wish to support Barry’s volunteer work, advocacy and future benches can share their views during Matters From the Floor at any city council meeting. The next meeting is scheduled for October 27 at 7:00 p.m.
