We’ll say it: The SCA Editors support city organized trash collection in Shorewood. Now, we challenge the city council to be proactive, and have the courage to make the decision that protects the expensive taxpayer funded infrastructure and the environment, while providing the most efficiency in service.
SCA has done the research in “Let’s Talk Trash.” The council should read it.
A summary of the obvious advantages of city organized trash collection is:
- Less street damage from heavy trucks, saving repair costs.
- Improved safety from fewer big trucks on small residential streets
- Decreased exhaust pollution.
- Greater control to choose service requirements and options.
- Regular competitive bidding to manage costs.
- Lower cost per household
- City accounting infrastructure is in place to bill each household.
Council members have been proud to say that infrastructure improvements are done “for the future.” The same philosophy should be applied to the long-term protection and maintenance of those costly projects.
SCA has reviewed the facts and the choice is obvious: It’s time for city organized trash collection. This is why we are holding the council accountable.
We challenge the council to take the lead and make it happen.
