Compare a few neighboring cities budgets and demographic information and you will learn that Shorewood taxpayers are paying more and perhaps getting less. For those who like charts and graphs keep reading.
Shorewood & Mound both have a $7.1MM budget in 2024. Shorewood has 51% fewer households than Mound. Mound services 35 parks and 17 lakes/ponds compared to Shorewood servicing 7 parks and 4 ponds.
Shorewood is 5.7 sq. miles and Victoria is 10.69 sq. miles. Victoria has $8.1MM budget in 2024 but without its Recreation Center revenue of more than $1.0MM, the budgets are similar. Victoria maintains 82 miles of roads compared to Shorewood’s 50 miles. Victoria has 34 parks, and 12 lakes compared to Shorewood’s 7 parks and 4 ponds. Victoria has 27% more households than Shorewood and pays 11% less in taxes per household than Shorewood residents.

Large projects are causing the city to incur debt at an unsustainable rate. The current bond debt is estimated at $27MM dollars up from just $5MM in 2019. Payment on this debt is $988,262 in 2024 and explodes to $2,237,849 per year in 2033. In addition bond interest and expenses are nearly $100,000 per year. Taxpayers have now spent $4,983,513 for a street with 21 homes (Strawberry Lane) – that’s $237,310 per home. See graph below.
