Shorewood Citizen Advocates (SCA) started as an idea in 2019. After three years of incubation, SCA went live in summer 2023. The goals were to provide service to residents focusing on local government accountability, transparency, environmental stewardship, and education. Flash forward to the SCA one-year anniversary. How have things gone?
- 100 articles+ have been published, including editorials.
- Over 25,000 visits have been made to various pages on the site.
- Additional writers, researchers, influencers and resident experts have joined the advocates.
- YouTube, Facebook and X are now part of our social media presence.
- Comment and rating opportunities have been added for each article, along with an SCA contact email for questions or disagreement.
There has been concern that many articles have no by-lines. As can be expected, most writers are reluctant to attribute their names out of concern for retribution. Certainly, some council members would understand, as they were personally targeted during previous elections and contentious issues in the city.
When weighing by-lines with quality content, it’s simple: Rather than forego worthwhile information, SCA continues to make accuracy our “north star.” Articles are always supported by solid sourcing of the content.

As SCA starts our second year, we will:
- Apply our core values to the November city council election.
- Educate readers about the positions held by candidates, hold incumbents accountable for their actions, and continue to bring transparency to decision-making and processes.
- Bring forth environmental topics that directly affect the quality of our natural spaces in Shorewood, and beyond
