If Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is in Shorewood, it is elsewhere in the South Lake Area. At a recent city council meeting, a resident described in breathtaking detail, their harrowing experience as ICE surrounded a neighboring house: knocking, peering into windows and photographing license plates. When neighbors confronted ICE, agents photographed them along with some of their vehicle plates. This happened in Shorewood.
This is no longer a “what if.” It is now real. ICE is conducting operations in South Lake cities. As of Jan. 26, South Lake Minnetonka Police has documented 5 calls concerning ICE in its jurisdiction. Lt. O’Keefe of SLMPD encourages residents to call 911 any time they are being harassed or feel unsafe. The bottom line is to stay calm, say little, ask for a lawyer, and don’t give consent unless legally required.
As the situation becomes more dangerous, ACLU Minnesota says know your rights:
- You have the right to remain silent. If you wish to exercise that right, say so out loud.
- You have the right to refuse to consent to a search of yourself, car or home.
- You have constitutional rights, regardless of your citizenship status.
- You have the right to a lawyer if you are arrested. Ask for one immediately.
- You have the right to record police actions as long as you do not interfere with their activities and are not breaking any other law.
- U.S. citizens cannot be detained or deported. Stay calm and ask the reason for being stopped. Ask, “Am I being detained, or am I free to go?” If free to go, walk away.
