Big Changes Coming for Highway 5

road work ahead

Carver County, along with project planners, and MnDOT, are planning improvements to Highway 5, between downtown Victoria and Highway 41.

This section of Highway 5 is currently functioning 50% over capacity for an existing two-lane road; carrying 27,000 vehicles per day.  The projected costs for the project are $117 million.

This is one of the four area improvement projects resulting from the Arboretum Area Transportation Plan and will directly affect the traffic flow around the area at least through 2026.

Key priorities for the project are:

  • Reduce congestion
  • Improve road safety
  • Connect local destinations
  • Enhance walking and biking conditions and connections
  • Respect the environment
